Starting in July 2026, we’ll launch a number of free community workshops in the Hattiesburg area. These workshops will focus on various topics and offer opportunities to generate fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and experimental forms. We also hope to offer options for sharing and gathering feedback on our work as a community. These half-day and day-long events will be held at different locations in the region at various times during the year with opportunities for kids, teens, and adults. See our schedule of community workshops below to find specifics on dates, locations, and topics.

Writing Inspired by Art (for Kids)

Where:Lauren Rogers Museum of Art

When: Friday, July 24th, 9:30-11:30

Who: 2nd-7th Graders

Looking for an end-of-the-summer activity? Join us at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art for a morning of creative writing. This 2-hour workshop will provide kids with sample readings, prompts to generate their own poetry or stories about the art in the museum, and time to share their writing as well. All young writers entering grades 2-7 are welcome to attend this free workshop, and no prior creative writing experience is required. All participants can expect to leave the workshop with a new knowledge of the museum’s collection, their own creative pieces, and readings/prompts that will support them as they continue writing on their own.

This event is hosted in collaboration with USM’s Mississippi Review. The Editor of Mississippi Review, Rachael Fowler, will lead the morning’s activities.

This free event will be capped at 12 participants, and registration will be required to reserve a spot. More information on how to register can be found on the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art website. Parents are not required to stay at the museum during the workshop.
